How To Switch Between Worksheets Without Using Mouse?

How can you switch between worksheets tabs (within the same workbook) without
using a mouse? i.e., what keyboard sequences do you need to do this? The
only way I've found is opening a second instance of Excel and alt-tab between
them, but then one spreadsheet is open in read only format. Can this be
done? Please help the carpal tunnel people out there! Thanks,

Joe (joemagiera at ameritech dot net)

I've got an application where I switch between workSheets and the mouse stays in the same location. Is there any Excel mouse over function with formula support?
Purpose is to display cell content in another currency with floating text when pointed with mouse cursor.
Formula is simple cell value under mouse cursor x currency rate (11.2 for example).

There should also be option to limit this function somehow to certain named areas or capability to switch it easily on/off with keyboard shortcut.

Is this task possible in Excel 2003?

A friend has somehow managed to switch the functionality of the mouse scroll wheel in Excel from moving the spreadsheet up and down to making it move right to left.

I found an old post from 2002 of someone with a similar problem and the only posted solution told him to check the mouse settings in Control Panel. I did this and could not find anything that would cause this.

I also checked MS Word and Internet Explorer and in both programs the mouse wheel moves the pages up and down as expected.

Does anyone know how Excel might have switched it to move left and right?

The problem seems to have corrected itself overnight (and with a re-boot).

Still, why it happened is bugging me. Could it be some kind of hotkey that he accidentally hit?

I have a pretty huge spreadsheet with +25 worksheets tabs. My problem is that sometimes I can not switch between them when clicking on the tabs. When I click the tabs either nothing happens or I get a standard windows right click menu even though i left click (like this one, but don't mind that this it taken from the windowns menu bar, it is the same right click menu i get )
I am aware that I am able to switch between the worksheet tabs by holding ctrl and pressing PgUp or PgDn however with 25 or more sheets clicking is much much easier.

I thought that another program could be blocking the tabs somehow, so I to a screenshot of all running processes.
Can anybody help me with this annoying problem?

My users (who are accountants) use dual monitors and would like to open a
different Excel file on each monitor for the purposes of reviewing changes
between the two. I know that one method of doing this is by opening Excel
twice with its shortcut, then highlighting one Excel window and opening an
Excel file, then highlighting the other window and opening the other Excel
file. Unfortunately, the software that my users use to organize the Excel
files does not allow this to be done; it always opens every Excel file in the
first Excel window no matter which instance is highlighted. We had a similar
problem with Adobe Acrobat, but there is a command line switch that forces
Acrobat to open a new instance for each file.
Is there a similar switch for Excel, or some other method of forcing Excel
to open a new instance of itself for each file? We are running Excel 2003 on
Windows XP. Thank you in advance for your replies.

I open the Find and replace Dialogue Box using CTRL+F and then enter
the value I am looking for. Excel moves the cursor to the cell in
question with the found value.
Is there anyway to then use the keyboard to move from the dialogue box
into the actual worksheet, without having to mouse click back into the
open file? It seems there has to be some type of way to use the
keyboard to move from the Find Dialogue box without using the mouse.
I hope I am being clear on what I am trying to do, it seems very
simple yet I cannot figure out what keyboard command to use to
basically select the Excel Window while leaving the Find Dialogue box
open. I am basically trying to use only the keyboard to jump back and forth between the the Find box and then the found cell in the work sheet.
Thank you. - BWP

Greetings. I have a swithbox for switching between 2 PCs that share a single keyboard and mouse. My old switchbox used ScrollLock to soft switch between the two machines. It had to be replaced and my new switchbox uses NumLock to soft-switch. Now, when I run a macro using SendKeys the computer switches me between the macines by itself because SendKeys causes multiple NumLock flashes. Does anyone know why NumLock flashes with SendKeys and how to get around it?

Morning All,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best way to switch between Read/Write and Read only in the active workbook.

The obvious way would be to save and close the file and re open it, but I'm wondering if there's a better way to do this while keeping the file open, or perhaps some kind of VBA code?

I have a UserForm (in Excel 2007 created with VBA) which is primarily going to be used to input data into a workbook. The problem is that the data is located in another workbook, and by default, when the UserForm is open in the first workbook, you're not able to switch between Excel windows. I tried setting the UserForm's ShowModal property to False and it sorta worked; the only issue then is that, while it is then possible to switch between workbooks with the UserForm open, the UserForm stays visible over the top of both, and being quite large, it covers most of the data in the second workbook anyway.

Is there a way to either switch between windows and leave the UserForm behind in the first window, or to have an event run when the activeworkbook changes so that i can shrink my UserForm down to nothing when that happens?

Is there a keyboard shortcut that will go to the first worksheet in a
workbook? I can use the mouse to click on the double arrow left, but
some activities aren't as efficient when my hands are on the keyboard.

I use the first worksheet as an index listing all the worksheets in
the workbook with hyperlinks to them. It works well to keep up with
update progress.

I'm not sure how, but suddenly I can no longer use the taskbar buttons to switch between open excel documents when I have more than one open.

Usually and at home on my PC there, when you open multiple Excel documents they are basically opened in their own "instance" of excel, however here at work when I open multiple files they always open in the main excel window...and thus when you click the taskbar button to switch to the doesnt work..

I have to minimize one and then open the other.. it's quite annoying but I can't figure out why or how this happened.

Any ideas?

Is there any way to capture mouse events over the worksheets? I'm sure there
are some API calls, but can I capture single/double-click, mouse move, etc.?

After selecting a single worksheet cell with my keyboard arrow keys, I want to press a keyboard button which transports me to the white cell edit field (just below the menu) so I can edit the cell.

The only way I know of doing this is by clicking on the cell edit field with my mouse. Icky.

How can I edit a cell without using the mouse?

I use Excel 2007 if it's any help.

I'd appreciate any tips.

Hi, I'm trying to get some macros to combine data from two open workbooks, and I can't figure out the commands to switch from the active workbook to the other open workbook and back. I'm new to VBA and just learning the ropes. All I can figure out is how to switch to another workbook with an exact name. If I record the macro to go to a recent file, for example Window > 1 (filename), the code that I get in VBA is Windows("filename").Activate. This doesn't translate to when I have two different workbooks with different filenames open.

Make sense? I'm a bit confused myself. Maybe just a list of basic workbook-switching techniques or commands would be useful.

Not sure what happen, but I can't seem to switch to my other workbook when 2 or more workbooks are open without first minimizing the workbook thats is currently open. In the task bar, it only shows 1 workbook open, but i have multiple workbooks open. How can i make this stop doing this.

before this problem, I was able to open 2 or more workbooks and they were displayed in the task bar for me to choose from, but now only one window is displayed in the task bar, but multiple workbooks are open. The only way i can switch to the other workbook is to minimize the current workbook.

Hi there,

I am currently writing a routine that writes data from Excel to a web-based form. This works successfully but has the slight down-side that if the user closes Internet Explorer (which is what I've automated), then the routine will crash.

I need to know is there a way of locking the keyboard and mouse for the duration of the routine?

hi all,
i have a typical problem with getting the mouse event.
I want to able to detect both mouse pressed ( left mouse button pressed
-i.e. held down) and mouse released events on my worksheets(in a range
of cells). Is it possible?
so basically , i want to color the cells while the user keeps mouse
button pressed and when the user releases the mouse button, i want to
remove that color. And this should be possible for a range of cells.
According to the infomation I have, work sheet objects only have this
selectionChange event, which fires only when the mouse button (left
click) is released but I want an event where I can detect the mouse
pressed and released both.

thanx in advance for help.

Hello all,

I would like my cursor to stay in the same cell when I switch worksheets. If I'm in B40 on worksheet one, and switch to worksheet two I would like the cursor to be in B40.

I'm using very basic excel functions with no scripting at the moment.

Any help is appreciated, Danke

I am using excel 2007. does anybody know a shortcut key to click the arrow down after you filter.

What I mean is when I press Ctrl+shift+L I get the filter, but then I have to use the mouse and click the arrow down to view the selection, then I have to use the mouse again to unselect the "Select All" button. from there i know how to select the number using the keyboard.

I use this a lot through out the day and wish I can only use the keyboard.

I have recently upgraded my machine to office 2007 and getting used to the
changes. The one thing that i cant get my head around is scrolling up and
down using the mouse wheel while editing the cells. For example in cell A1 i
type = A2+A1000. After i press A2+ i can scroll down to select the cell
A1000 in previous version of excel, but i am unable to do so in the newer
version. It also doesnt not work when i go to cell A1 and press F2 (edit
mode), which was working previously. I am thinking it's a simple switch or
some sort of setting that i am missing. I have looked through quite
thoroughly and still not able to resolve it. I have updated all my mouse
drivers etc...but nothing seems to work.

I am working on a Lenovo r500 thinkpad and i have synaptics pointing device
drivers installed on my machine for mouse. I installed Alps, Ultranav and
few other new mouse drivers, nothing seemed to correct this issue.

Is anyone able to suggest a resolution after checking through the examples
provided above. You assistance will be much appreciated.

I have a macro-enabled spreadsheet with very few macros. The spreadsheet is mostly designed as an information center with a couple dozen worksheets. I have recently tried to open the file, and I receive the following error.

I click Yes... and then I receive the following log report.

I have tried opening the file as read only, opening and repairing it, downloading an Excel repair tool, copying worksheets one at a time to a new workbook, copying and pasting special values, opening up the workbook in a text editor, and nothing has worked. I am afraid I have lost the information forever, but it seems like this problem is not that uncommon, so I am hoping my last-ditch effort to save my latest information will work! You can find the workbook on an external website because it exceeds the attachment limits here. Changes.xlsm

Not sure if this is the right place, but ...

Seems that excel xp is randomly having a really annoying problem.
Left-clicking in a cell seems to result in a permanent selecting mode
which renders the whole of excel imoperable. Basocally, the mosue
continus to select cells even thou I'm not holding down any mouse
buttons, and refuses to stop selecting cells. I have changed the mouse
nad keyboard, and it still happens. This issue sometimes begins at
startup of excel, and sometimes after using excel for a while.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix?

Hi all. I have a very large Excel macro that I run daily. It consists of opening several other worksheets, copying specific cells and then pasting the values of those cells in another workbook. Usually, the other worksheets are open at other workstations and therefore, the macro prompts me to open as read-only. I click "read-only", it does its thing and then it asks me if I want to save the changes. I always click "no".

Furthermore, after I run this macro, Excel is pretty much unusable unless I close the program and re-open it. It seems that it keeps some things in its "memory" and when those other worksheets become available for read-write, it asks me if I want to open it again. I don't mind clicking out of it, but the slow Excel is definitely a problem. Every click requires a waiting time and it frequently locks up altogether.

My questions a

a) Is there a way to get it to automatically open as read-only and not save changes?
b) What can I do to clear whatever it's doing in the background so I can use Excel again without closing?

I have a spreadsheet that runs 24/7 monitor and the cells automatically update. I need to add a new sheet to the workbook. My question is, How can I set the spreadsheet to switch between the different sheets every so many seconds?
