Using Relative Hyperlinks

How would one set up relative hyperlinks in Excel? For example, if the links
refer to a file system directory, so that the whole hyperlink would be <base
directory>/<variable part of filename>, how could one set things up so that
if the <base directory> were to change, one could either change one value or
change all of the hyperlinks at one shot?

Let's say that <base directory> = "c:\my files\html base\" and <variable
....> = "html_file1.htm", "html_file2.htm", etc. How would I change the
"c:\my files\html base\" to "c:\my files\other html base\" with one edit?
And how do I set up relative hyperlinks in the spreadsheet?

I have very minimal Excel knowledge/experience. So please keep things real
simple for me, if possible.

Hi all,

The following code is placed in workbook 'A' and is used to open workbook 'B'. These workbooks will now always be housed in the same directory and i want to change the code to use a relative path reference by determining the path of workbook 'A'. here's what I had:

Sub income_statement()

Application.WindowState = xlMaximized
Application.Workbooks.Open "C:\Documents and Settings\.....\workbook B.xls", UpdateLinks:=xlUpdateLinksAlways

End Sub

could you suggest how to change this to use a relative path reference?

How do I get the colors to change automatically when I use a drop down list.
Per say here is what I am trying to do

If a certain "word" is used from the drop down list I want the background of
that cell to change its color to "green." And if later I change the "word" to
another from the drop down list, it will change it's color to a specified
color.

The drop down list that I use was created from cells that have the colors
already in the "word", but I do not know how to make the list show the colors
so it puts the word & color automatically in the drop down list to the cell
with the drop down (if that makes any sense).

If there is a way, please spell it out simple enough for me to understand,
as I don't know fully the capabilities of formulas or vba.

I would like to send an Excel file with hyperlinks of photo's attached to cells but when it is sent the recieving person cannot access the hyperlinks anymore. I am using 2007, I have tried to send the folder but that didn't seem to work. Any other way around this?

I am trying to use the following Access VB code to rename all the files from *.aqi in a directory to *.csv:

Code:

Sub test()
Name "C:\myfolder\*.aqi" As "C:\myfolder\*.csv"
End Sub

The problem is that VBA does not accept wild cards (at least as given here).

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I have a VBMacro Excel file loaded on a Server that numerous people access. A Macro in this file creates a Copy of a specific Sheet within the Active Workbook and I want to Save it to the individual's Desktop.

How do I find out what the current User's desktop folder path is each time the Marco is run by a different User?

Example User's path: 'C:\Documents and Settings\jfarc\Desktop'

Where 'jfarc' is the name of the current User which, will of course change with every different User that runs the Macro.

Also, is there a way to pull out of Excel what is the current User's 'Options | General | Default File Location' entry? Which may differ from the above directory.

I am familiar with and use the following coding for Opening/Saving files to the current directory of the opened workbook, but it only gives the path of the existing Excel workbook and not the current User's Directory Path:

Dim wbThis As Workbook
Set wbThis = ThisWorkbook
ChDir wbThis.Path

I have searched and read all the help files. I find the properties of
an object, I see how I can "lock", "size and move with cells" or "not
move with cells". No matter what I select, the object moves off the
screen, when the user, scrolls to the right of the spreadsheet.

Is there a way to lock the position, let's say , in the upper right
corner and have it stay there?

This would be quite useful for an EXIT button, that I have created,
that will close the program without saving (it's a read-only file.)

Thanks to all the wonderful people here that have been so helpful and
give us their valuable insight and time.

I have a given length of steel bar...Example(550 feet)
I have various cut lengths that I can pick from...
14'-10".....13'- 9".. 12'-8"........(up to 6 different lengths)

I need to know the best combination of lengths to cut the long bar into to have minimal scrap left when we get to the end of the 550 feet.....

Cut as many of the longest cut lengths possiable.....Cut as few of the shortest cut lengths possiable

Due to the fact that I will have to convert this to a PLC application when completed, I want to find a mathmatical way to do this inside excel and not use the "solver"....Assuming that I/we can come up with an equation to do this .....
Any and all advice/help would be appricated.....

I have a requirement to change the panes in excel.
My excel file will contain more than one tab.
I have to free the first two lines in all the tabs except the first one.
I tried the following code.

Code:

xlsobj.Worksheets(1).Rows("1:2").Select
ActiveWindow.FreezePanes = True

But in this I have to change the Active Worksheets in VBA, Which I want to avoid.
Is there any method to achieve this without selecting the cells.
Something like
Code:

xlsobj.Worksheets(1).Rows("1:2").FreezePanes = True

Hello,

I am new to using Excel and I am not very computer literate. I am looking for some help with a spreadsheet I am making. Here is the problem:

I have a column of 14 numbers in cells A1 to A14. If all of these values are less than 2%, I would like a "Pass" to display in cell B1. If any of these values are greater than 2% I would like a "Fail" to display in cell B1.

I have got a formula that works for a single cell but I can't figure out how to get it to apply to more than one cell. For example, I have entered =IF(A1<2,"Pass","Fail") in cell B1. Now if the value I enter in A1 is less than 2, it shows a "Pass", and if the value in A1 is greater than 2 it shows a "Fail" in cell B1. How can I get this to apply to all of the cells from A1 to A14?

If somebody could help me out that would be great.

Thanks,
Randy

I was wondering if there is a way of getting a macro to open the "save as" dialogue box and then have it fill in the "file name" field.

I dont want it to actually make the save though as I want the user to have the chance to check that the save location is correct and the option to change the filename if required.

Cheers.

Hi there,

I have a spreadsheet with some cells setup with a drop-down list containing
Y, N or N/A

This is being used on a TabletPC but if I make a mistake or need to change
back to a blank field I have to invoke the soft keyboard, activate the cell
and hit backspace then close the soft keyboard - quite a long-winded
procedure just to change an incorrect choice!

What I would like to do is add a blank to the list so if I have to revert
back to a blank I can just use the stylus to choose a blank from the chooser
list.

How do I add the option of inputting a blank from the Data Validation List
bearing in mind I am using the Data Validation Source box for entering my
choices directly and not specifying a range of cells?

I have tried adding "" and even a space to no avail.

Although not a betting man I would wager there is a simple 'fix' for this
but things are only simple if you know how in the first instance! ;^)

I'm trying to come up with a solution to calculate the man hours and days worked over multiple sheets.

I have a file that has 8 sheets. the first seven sheets are the days of the week and the 8th sheet is where I want to calculate the hours.

The days of the week consists of "Name" "Date" Hours"

The 8th sheet consists of "Name", "Days of the week in their own column (7 columns in total)", "Total Hours" and "Total Days Worked"

Now... each day is always a different group and what I'm hoping for is to create a formula that can grab each name with their hours and throw them into the 8th sheet. So when the end of the week is done I have all the Employees weekly hours and days worked all finished.

I hope this makes sense. This file is to track about 100 employees that are on a rotational work schedule.

I have attached a sample file.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have cells in a column, some colored yellow, some not. I am trying to use
the SUMIF function to sum only the cells in the range that are colored. Can
this be done? Can I enter something in the "criteria" part of the formula
that can do this?

=SUMIF(D3:D13,"criteria",D3:D13)

I also tried to use the CELL function's color feature, but I couldn't get it
to work right. I don't know how to get Excel to recognize if a cell is
colored in a formula.
=CELL("color",cell)

It might just be that I don't know what this means in Help:

"color" --> 1 if the cell is formatted in color for negative values;
otherwise returns 0 (zero).

Can anyone help?

Hello.

I have two huge excel files, with many rows and columns, they "should" look the same.

But I need to find out if anything has been added or removed from the second one compared to the first one.

Which is the easiest way to accomplish this?

Searched this forum and Google but couldn't find what i was looking for.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Try this...

There are some valid datas in the cells A2 (Eg. 100), B2(Eg. 200), C2 and D2.
Data validation is used in cell K2 to limit it to a set of values.

Can we implement this formula?

IF(K2="Approved")
{
A2=A3; B2=B3; C2=C3; D2=D3; K2=K3;
}
ELSE
{
no change to any values.
}

Thanks in advance...

I get the error message "reference is not valid" each time I open my spreadsheet. I get this message three times, and once I am done clicking ok on all three of them, my spreadsheet works just fine. The problem is, I have to send it to a bunch people.

I have a sheet with raw data a sheet with pivot tables a sheet with a dashboard and a simple macro
I don't have any #REF cells either.

Someone has any idea of what could be the problem?

thanks

I often use if statements to return empty cells, for example:

=IF(a1=0,"ERROR","")

The trailing "" returns an empty cell. The problem is, it is not TRULY empty. If I fill that formula down, I cannot, for example, jump from one "ERROR" cell to the next by hitting Ctrl arrow-down because it seems to think that these empty cells have contents.

Is there a way to designate, in such a formula as above, to return a TRULY empty cell?

Thanks

I run a small business. I want to start keeping track of inventory using a barcode system.

I know Excel "ok", but I don't know programming.'

I'd like to be able to do something very simple (for now)...

For example...if I had PRODUCT / CODE / INV VALUE

A - CODE A - 5
B - CODE B - 11
C - CODE C - 14

I would want to be able to click a button (or scan a code for) : ADD +1 or REMOVE -1

...then scan the barcode on the product (A) and have it add or remove one, respectively. So, if the row for A is:

A - CODE A - 5

I choose "ADD" (with a button or scan code), then scan the barcode, and the spreadsheet automatically finds the code in the sheet, and changes the corresponding inventory value:

A - CODE A - 6

Does that make sense? How might I go about doing that?

We have a number of Excel users in our office who cannot copy and paste
between Excel workbooks. They can copy and paste between worksheets. When
you highlight the section to copy and then go to the new workbook both the
paste
and paste special are "grayed out". This is true whether you right-click the
mouse, go to the edit menu, or use control keys. This occurs with any data
type and the most simple workbooks. I have seen some suggestions here but
none have worked for this particular problem. I have reset the menus and
renamed the .xlb files and neither helps. You can open the clipboard and the
paste will work, but there is no paste special option. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello, what I would like to do is take a portion of a sheet..... So the cells I want to mirror are in the proposal sheet cells B32 x F51. And then mirror the exact duplicate copy to another sheet. The other sheet should have those same values at A20 X G39. What I am trying to do is have a sheet that has skus, prices, and so forth and then when I add,delete, merge, color, or do anything to the cell on the "proposal creation" sheet I want it to mirror only a specific cells to another sheet that is "salesman copy" that we will print to clients. So this way ont he proposal copy a salesman can insert rows or even change the color of the cells and then have it mirror exactly the same on the "salesman copy" which is what we will print for clients. Thank you.
