Function Needed For Encoding Text

I am playing around with creating a text encryption and decryption tool using mainly MS Excel and a little bit of MS Word. The version is 2003. I plan to use macros to prepare an unencrypted message, and for decoding an encrypted message.

My question at this point is: Is there a function which expands on "Code()". This function converts the 1st letter of a text string to its corresponding numerical value. Is there a way (either a function or some sort of workaround) to return the numerical value of the second letter of the text string (and the third, and the fourth, etc.).

If you are interested, here is the challenge I am working on (if not, you can skip this):

Create a workbook. List out all possible characters, numbered 1 to xxx. This would include uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and punctuation marks. Using the random number generator function, assign each letter a random number. Using the sort function, resort the data so that each letter now has a new randomly generated position in the alphabet. For example, If there are 150 different letter where A=1 a=2, B=3, b=4, etc. after they have been sorted, "A" has an equal chance of now being 1 - 150.

While this is a start, this type of code can easily be broken. So to make it more complicated, we can, from letter to letter. shift which key is used to determine what "A" equals. To creating more keys, we simply create a new worksheet page. and repeat the steps above. I would start with 10 pages of keys.

From there we break down the message letter by letter using the CODE() function. This is why i need to figure out how to look at the second and third position in a text string.

Once we have broken the message down to each letter, it is simply a matter of figuring out a way of choosing which key to use for each letter to encrypt the message. I was thinking of using a password, which only the sender and receiver know, which could help in choosing which key to use for which letter. Therefore, even if someone is able to obtain a copy of the workbook, the message would only make sense with the proper password.

For simplicity, lets say if the password is 5 letters long, use key #5 for the first letter, key #6 for the second letter, key #7 for the third letter, etc. If it is 10 letters long, start with key #10, etc. This way, the exact same message would be encoded (and decoded) differently depending on what the length of the password being used was.

Of course it is easy to make this more complicated, for example, possibly taking each letter in the password, giving it a numerical value multiplying it times 7, and dividing it by the length of the password, then rounding it up or down to get the corresponding key to be used.

If I can get the system this far, there are many things that can be added to further complicate the code. I think the first step would be to add nonsense letters into the code. If everything is one for one, at the very least, you can tell exactly how many characters are in the message. However, if 10 - 50% of the characters listed in the text are nonsense characters, then it is very hard to determine the true length of the message.

Of course, adding additional key pages would complicate the code exponentially.

Anyways, that's where I am at right now. Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

I have a long list of data validation. I was wondering if there is a way when I clik on the drop down menu and type the first letter, automatically Excel shows all list with that letter.

Right now, I have to click on the drop down menu and scroll manually until I reach that desired list.

Thanks.

have tried to format all of the cells as "Text" to show as entered, but it
doesnt work. PLEASE HELP

when I type a number or letter into a cell and then press enter the cursor
jumps way down the page to what appears to be a random cell. The one i

Hello,

My Cell C3 is a numeric value.....I have set conditional formatting to
make the text red and bold when the number is equal or less than 10,000
is there a way I can make cell E3 display a message when the C3
condition is true?? or if not a message is there a way to make a
message box pop up when my C3 condition of less then or equal to 10,000
is true?

how would I do something like this?

I am creating a data sheet to be completed by other users. I would like to

I have found similar posts on the forum, but nothing without use of a userform.

I have the following code:

Code:

Sub Development()
    Pass = InputBox("Please enter development password", "Password")
    If Pass = "XYZ" Then
        UnhideAll
    Else: MsgBox ("Password incorrect, please try again")
    End If
End Sub

This works, but I want to hide the text as it is entered.
Is there a way I can enter this as a property? i.e. inputbox.text.property = ... or something?? I've tried what seems intuitive, but nothing works.

Help!

Hi All,

If I drag a formula to the right it adapts the column letter in the formula from A to column B, which is standard Excel functionality.

However, if I drag the formula to the right I want Excel to skip a column each time.

In other words:

=A1 ; = B1 ; = C1

Should be

=A1 ; = C1 ; = E1 etc...

Is there an easy trick to do this?

Thanks,

Michiel

Hello All

I wonder if you could help with this one, I have a list of data like this (no spaces or other characters)

JN551122B

What I need to do is split each of the characters in to its own cell

if JN551122B was in cell A1 I'd want to return:

B2 C2 D2 E2 F2 G2 H2 I2 J2
J N 5 5 1 1 2 2 B

The nearest I have got is the right function, but it brings over the preceeding characters, and I need each character in its own cell. Hopefully I could copy/paste a formula and change the reference for each cell value, i.e. 1 would return J, 2 = N, 3 = 5, 4 = 5 etc.

Thanks for your help!

Thnx for your help man. Now I have another situation.

I have the following:

1. Login form containing username and password fields.
2. Data entry form

I want to do the following:

1. Coding for username and password fields, which, If the login is successful, takes me to DATA Entry Form, Otherwise shows message "Invalid Login".

Thanks in anticipation.

Posted this on the Ozgrid forums, but haven't gotten any help yet, so I thought I'd try here too!

I've been having a strange problem lately. I have a fairly lengthy macro that works perfectly most of the time. Occasionally it will run as expected but as soon as the macro ends, excel becomes unresponsive to mouse-clicks. When I click anywhere (trying to select a cell, or an excel menu item...clicking anywhere in excel) I'll get the a 'ding' system sound and nothing will happen. BUT, if I use the keyboard arrow keys, I can see that the active cell selection moves accordingly. Then it gets really strange - when I have a cell highlighted and press any key to input text, it gets duplicated. So if I press "s' it will input "ss" into the cell, and then when I press enter it will auto-move to the next cell down, but nothing ends up getting saved into the previous cell.

I don't understand what's going on at all. I can't think of anything in my macro that would have these kinds of effects. I've made sure that screenupdating is turned back on at the end of every procedure. If I go into the VBE, I can manually run procedures and they all work fine. The only way I've been able to get back to normal is by force closing excel altogether and re-opening. Any ideas?

______________________

Still having trouble, and the same thing is happening with this workbook on two different computers, so I don't think it's a hardware, or OS specific issue. When it gets locked up like this, I can still do anything in the VBE (edits cells, run macros, etc.) with no problems. If I'm in the excel window, I can click alt on the keyboard and the shortcut keys for the menu come up, but I can't go deeper than that by clicking the letter shortcuts, they do nothing. If I use the delete key to delete the contents of a cell, then it gets deleted. But if I type anything else (numbers, letters, or symbols) then it types 2 instances of the key every time, yet when I hit enter, nothing changes in the cell. I also can't really bring focus to the excel window if something else (ie. the VBE) is on top of it, clicking into the excel window just gives the little system 'ding' sound and nothing happens.

If I hit the save button in the VBE (since I can't click anything in the excel window), then it seems to snap out of it and go back to normal. I tried searching for anything simmilar to this and can't find anything...

Any help would be much appreciated. This is driving me nuts!

Hi

I need to open a password protected workbook using VBA.

I've tried the code below but I still get prompted for a password.

Code:

Workbooks.Open Filename:="\\HOME\Working\Report.xls" _
        , Password:="xxxx"

How do I get it to open automatically???

Can I create a message box that displays a message when the spreadsheet is first opened?

If so, where do I put it?

I have workbook in which I want to save a specific worksheet to a new file with only the values saved - all data in this worksheet are references to cells on another worksheet, which is using VLOOKUP to pull data from a database.

Found the following code and it gets me close, but it copies the cell references, not the values. It also allows me to specify the file name from a cell reference.

I want the new workbook file to simply be saved, not opened, and a message box to display stating where the file was saved (will always be in the same location on the LAN).

What modifications do I make to this to get this to work per above requirements?

Sub CopyMe()
Dim SaveMeAs As String
SaveMeAs = Sheets("Sheet1").Range("B2").Text
Sheets("Sheet3").Copy
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:="C:\My Documents\" & SaveMeAs
End Sub

I have been using Excel (XP) to make a text chart for several months. Some of
my text entries are rather lengthy. The past two weeks these lengthy entries
are showing up as pound signs (#########) when I click off the cell. I know
the text will fit in the cell, and the problem isn't solved by making the
cell bigger or using a little bit less text. I have the cells formatted as
"text" and "wrap to fit". I have printed the pages and the printed version
also has pound signs. I just want my text to show up!

I get the error message "reference is not valid" each time I open my spreadsheet. I get this message three times, and once I am done clicking ok on all three of them, my spreadsheet works just fine. The problem is, I have to send it to a bunch people.

I have a sheet with raw data a sheet with pivot tables a sheet with a dashboard and a simple macro
I don't have any #REF cells either.

Someone has any idea of what could be the problem?

thanks

Hi,
I need the necessity do delete a sequence of sheets in my workbook.
If I use this code:

With ActiveWorkbook
If .Worksheets.Count >= 5 Then
For n = 5 To .Worksheets.Count
Worksheets(n).Delete
Next n
End If
End With

I receive a confirmation message box with this message:

"Data may exist in the sheet(s) selected for deletion. To permanently delete the data, press Delete" [DELETE] [CANCEL]

I wish to delete all sheets without receiving any message.

Is it possible?

Many thanks in advance for your kind support.

Hello All, I have a column where cells need to be 50 characters long, it contains addresses, however, since all the addresses do not meat the criteria, I need to add (blank spaces) to reach the 50 characters, any idea on how to approach this?

Example

Fire Street #50 this cell contains 17 characters therefore I need to add the rest by adding blank spaces to reach 50 characters, otherwise the system I am exporting the data will not understand this cell

We have a large (4,000+ rows) excel worksheet from a prior employee that I
would like to be able to use, but it is password protected and no one has the
password. Is there a way to copy or save it as a different file that will
not copy the password protection? It would save me a couple days of work if
it is possible.
Thanks

Hello

I have several rows of text data, the first 17 characters of which are in this format (4 letters_-_DD.MM.YYYY

It's then followed by a variable number of characters i.e.

ABCD - 01.02.2003 ABCDEFG HIJ KLMNO

I would be grateful for a formula that will delete all characters to the right of the 17th character (i.e. the '3').

Many thanks!
