Googling this question turned up a lot of people with the *opposite* problem, so
I'm convinced I must be overlooking something obvious. The issue arises on 2
different PCs, running Excel 2000 and 2003, both with WinXP.
I have several hundred files to be hyperlinked from a spreadsheet. When done
they're all destined for a **. So I figure we need all the hyperlink paths to
be relative, that is, the address field for each link should be in the form
\mystuff.txt and not E:\mystuff.txt (nor any other letter plus :\mystuff.txt)..
But no matter what I put in the 'Hyperlink Base' box in File-> Properties->
Summary, when I pick a cell in the sheet, click Insert-> Hyperlink, and BROWSE
to a file to be linked, that file's full ABSOLUTE path gets inserted.
Is there a way to disable that? I see tons of posts saying you can *type* the
file's relative path, but oddly enough, nobody mentions how convenient it would
be if you could make the Browse button automatically INSERT said relative path.
This is why I'm convinced something obvious has escaped me. Is there no way
to make it do that?
I know I can de-absolute all the links at once afterward with a little macro
that cycles through them & applies the VBA Replace function, but that seems like
sort of a back-assward way to "fix" it. Am I crazy? (Shhhhh!)
If the answer is bonehead simple, I promise to slink quietly back into my cave.

Hi all, the title pretty much says it all, I have a form where I am trying to create a button that will pop up a window where the user will browse to the desired folder and once that folder is selected, the path will be copied as a text string into the cell adjacent. My command Button cell is in B3 and the path should be shown in C3.

I found this solution for "drop down list with hyperlink" but it did not work.
Perhaps a better solution is to use a workaround that relies on the HYPERLINK function to refer to whatever is selected in the drop-down list. For instance, if you have your data validation drop-down list in cell A1, then you might put the following formula in cell B1:
=HYPERLINK(A1, "Goto Link")
The solution directly above provides exactly what I am looking for
in the field where I write the formula, but it fails to hyperlink.

I have a VBMacro Excel file loaded on a Server that numerous people access. A Macro in this file creates a Copy of a specific Sheet within the Active Workbook and I want to Save it to the individual's Desktop.

I have an MS Excel File (2007 version) sample file attached, which has name, designation, blood group and so on. The last column is for hyperlinking photographs of individuals.
In the same folder where I have saved this excel file, are lying photographs of individuals. While scanning the photographs, I have saved them serially i.e. 1,2,3 and so on.
In the Excel file, in last column, I have given the respective serial numbers. In order to hyperlink one has to select that particular Cell, press Ctrl K and you automatically go to the folder containing individual photographs, you select that photo and OK.
Problem :
I have to do this hyperlinking one by one and if there 1000 photos, lot of time is wasted.
Solution Needed :
Just in case of excel formula, which we copy and paste, Can I get a command by virtue of which the column titled Photo or column next to it gets automatically Hyperlinked to respective photo WHEN I copy and paste such command to all cells in that column.

I have searched and read all the help files. I find the properties of
an object, I see how I can "lock", "size and move with cells" or "not
move with cells". No matter what I select, the object moves off the
screen, when the user, scrolls to the right of the spreadsheet.
Is there a way to lock the position, let's say , in the upper right
corner and have it stay there?
This would be quite useful for an EXIT button, that I have created,
that will close the program without saving (it's a read-only file.)

I use a excel file through the course of the day and need to insert the current date in one column and the current time in the next column. I want to be able to just highlight the selected range of cells I need to insert into and hit a macro button and have the date and time inserted into just the cells I have highlighted. I'm not sure how to make this work with just the cells I've highlighted. Any help any one can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a large database with names, addresses etc. When I try to make changes
to the email address, like change the font color or change on letter, Excel
tries to email the address. If I click in the formula bar to make the

I'm having a problem in a workbook with several ActiveX command buttons. I had been using the form control buttons to run macros, but the boss wanted each button to have it's own, different color. So I removed the form control buttons and created new ActiveX command buttons. I got into the button properties and set the background colors. I added the _Click code to run the macros when the user clicked the buttons.
All of the buttons were working fine. Then I saved and closed the workbook and went to lunch. Now when I open the workbook, the buttons don't work! When I click them nothing happens. They appear frozen. They don't even seem to click. No error message. Nothing.
If I right-click the button in Design Mode and select Properties, I get sheet properties not the button properties. I can't seem to locate the command button properties any longer. I still see the button name "cmdButtonGetInfo" and "=EMBED("Forms.CommandButton.1","") in the name box and formula bar. The odd thing is if I create a new button it works fine until I save and close the file. When I reopen the file none of the buttons work.

I have a file that became too big due to phantom bloat, unused range saved by Excel and all that kind of reasons. Thank to previous posts on that board tackling that issue, I was able to find how to proceed to reduce the file back to its normal size.
But I did so in a beta file (test file). The real file has become so big (103MB!) that Excel cannot even open it anymore! The file contains archive info that we do not have anywhere else.
Is there anyway then to open the file or to reduce its size without opening it (through magics...)? I just honestly don't know how to retrieve that info before deleting that file.

I get the error message "reference is not valid" each time I open my spreadsheet. I get this message three times, and once I am done clicking ok on all three of them, my spreadsheet works just fine. The problem is, I have to send it to a bunch people.
I have a sheet with raw data a sheet with pivot tables a sheet with a dashboard and a simple macro
I don't have any #REF cells either.

My question is this - I have a large spreadsheet with multiple columns of information. I want to sort it by a certain column. I know how to do this. My question is, once I'm done with my work I want to sort it back to the original "sort" but I'm not sure how they have it sorted. I've tried to figure out how they have it sorted but can't. Is there some way to go back to the original sort?

I have a co-worker's file that he is having trouble with. He is using Excel 2000 SP3. When copying a cell with a formula in it of "=D6+C6" and pasting it into the next cell down, it will display the same value in the cell as the calculated value from above, but has the correct formula displayed in the formula bar of "=D7+C7".
Example:
A1: 50
A2: 10
B1: 60
B2: 20
A3: Formula: =A1+A2 Displays: 60
Right click A3, Copy, right click B3, paste

I can't find this solutions anywhere. I know how to send emails from Excel using VBA. When I get to the Body section, I want to insert a clickable link to a website, and also a clickable link to send an email (not as important as the website). Can this be done? I have found code to insert links to files, but none for website links.

The system requires .csv files, so this is how I need to save my doc (with this extension). I have been successful at preventing Excel from coverting that long number into scientific format. I have saved as a TXT file, pasted the longer number and it displays correctly. That is all good. But I have to save as a .csv. So if I do that, close the Excel window, and then open again (as the .csv file), the numbers are back to being displayed in scientific format. I have tried creating an Excel doc from scratch and entering text in Text format, to see if this created a cleaner file. But again, the second I save as .csv, close the window and then open that file up again, that dang scientific format is back.
Does anyone have any idea of how to work around this? Once I have successfully gotten the numbers to display as the long-chain number, how can I get them to "stick" so that they don't revert back to scientific format when I reopen the file?

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and have been using excel for about 3 years. I have learned alot but still can not figure out how to make numbers add up in one box like a running total. Meaning, If I have a list and in the list is one cell for each item say like cell a1 is for a can of coke and cell a2 is for a car tire and so on,and i want to keep a running total by adding a number to cell a1 or a2 like say "3 i.e. 3 tires or cans of coke" and later that day i come back and need to add 2 more ......so i want to be able to just click on the cell a1 or a2 and enter the number 2 and the cell would add the number in it to the number im adding to it to show a result of 5 tires or whatever. I am sorry If i am not asking the question in an understandable manor but its the best way I can think to ask it.lol anyways, any help would be appreciated, Thanks in advance.

I am working on a worksheet, and would like to have an entire row transferred to another worksheet based upon a certain cell's value.
Having searched through the many solved threads on this site, I attempted to customize some of the code to my worksheet. Not being proficient in Macro/VBA, I failed. I figured I would ask for help, and see if anyone can provide what I am looking for.
Basically, I am attempting to construct a "work in process" file, and would like all completed work to be deleted from the work in process sheet, and transferred to a sheet that contains a running list of all work completed.
Attached is an example of what I am working on. I would like Column Q (Status) to determine if a row can be moved to a sheet that contains the list of all work completed, and eliminated from the original sheet. Once Status is updated to "Complete", it would be helpful to be able to run a macro/click a button that would perform the transfer.
Can anyone assist?

Hello, I am pretty new to excel programming/messing around so I'll refer to those who are much wiser than I am. I am trying to set up a form for work, in this form I want to have a page with a bunch of cells pre-sized. What I want to do is when I insert a picture from a job site, that when this picture gets inserted, it will automatically resize to fit within the cell. I don't have time to manually resize dozens of pictures and if I could get this to work it would be awesome! I tried to search for an answer using the search function, but I kept getting a fatal error about allowable memory? Thanks in advance for you help!

I've been having a strange problem lately. I have a fairly lengthy macro that works perfectly most of the time. Occasionally it will run as expected but as soon as the macro ends, excel becomes unresponsive to mouse-clicks. When I click anywhere (trying to select a cell, or an excel menu item...clicking anywhere in excel) I'll get the a 'ding' system sound and nothing will happen. BUT, if I use the keyboard arrow keys, I can see that the active cell selection moves accordingly. Then it gets really strange - when I have a cell highlighted and press any key to input text, it gets duplicated. So if I press "s' it will input "ss" into the cell, and then when I press enter it will auto-move to the next cell down, but nothing ends up getting saved into the previous cell.
I don't understand what's going on at all. I can't think of anything in my macro that would have these kinds of effects. I've made sure that screenupdating is turned back on at the end of every procedure. If I go into the VBE, I can manually run procedures and they all work fine. The only way I've been able to get back to normal is by force closing excel altogether and re-opening. Any ideas?

When it gets locked up like this, I can still do anything in the VBE (edits cells, run macros, etc.) with no problems. If I'm in the excel window, I can click alt on the keyboard and the shortcut keys for the menu come up, but I can't go deeper than that by clicking the letter shortcuts, they do nothing. If I use the delete key to delete the contents of a cell, then it gets deleted. But if I type anything else (numbers, letters, or symbols) then it types 2 instances of the key every time, yet when I hit enter, nothing changes in the cell. I also can't really bring focus to the excel window if something else (ie. the VBE) is on top of it, clicking into the excel window just gives the little system 'ding' sound and nothing happens.
If I hit the save button in the VBE (since I can't click anything in the excel window), then it seems to snap out of it and go back to normal. I tried searching for anything simmilar to this and can't find anything...
