formatting duplicates, triplicates and almost matches

I am trying to get Excel 2007 to work for me rather than the opposite.

I have a database that I am extracting data from by year that consists of a column for a customer name, a column for a file number, and a column for a liability amoumt (other columns are present but not important at this stage)

First, I need to programatically color all duplicate file numbers within a customer name, all triplicate file numbers

Second, We have some instances where we may have file 123 and 123A which need to be colored as a duplicate. The problem is that not all file numbers are the same (genereated by the customer not us) and the ending piece may be a -1, .1 or a letter

I know the first part should be simple -- but I have run into a brain freeze here

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks

Post up sample BEFORE and AFTER worksheets. make sure the sample data set FULLY demonstrates all the hurdles to be overcome and the expected results. Colors...etc...show it all.

Click on GO ADVANCED and use the paperclip icon to attach your workbook. Saving it in .XLS format would be helpful, too.
