My guess is that its the mouse. Try plugging in a different one.

Of course, there's a 10% chance that I'm wrong and it could be a virus or outdated mouse drivers.

Oh! Yes, give that a shot.

But...now that I think of it. It could be possible that you are accidentally clicking when you mean to just move the mouse. (I assume you're using a touchpad).

Try experimenting a little on, say, an icon on your desktop for instance.
Move your cursor over the icon, pick up with your finger, then try to move the mouse pointer again.
If the icon gets selected again by doing so, then I'd say you're unintentionally clicking on the cell.

However, you did say that you can't deselect the cell after it has been selected... so... try a different mouse is still my vote.

Its the same issue as if you look at excel with EXT enable, click on the cell, whereever you move the mouse the cells are highlighted.

So how do I deselect Extended mode ... the toolbar does not show it as being active, pressing F8 a couple of times does not show or not show the EXT on the status bar.

Hmmm...try connecting a different keyboard to your laptop then?

I can replicate the "not letting go of the mouse" by enabling EXT via F8 and I can also disable it by pressing F8.
