    delete extra rows at bottom

I am trying to delete extra rows at the bottom of my worksheet because they're all empty but they're making the file size huge!

    Here are the repro steps:

    1. I have two columns in the first worksheet
    a. day (mon-sun),
    b. date (1-1-07 to 12-31-07)
(these take up 366 rows total)

    2. I copied columns A and B and then I went to the second spreadsheet and went to "paste special" > "paste link".

    3. Now, that second worksheet has 65536 rows instead of only 366. I tried deleting the extra rows, but it's not working...

How can I get rid of these extra rows?

I'd appreciate any help - these extra rows are killing the file size.

    Hi,

a spreadsheet has 65536 rows, if you select View - Page Break Mode you will not see them, but if empty they do not affect filesize.

To 'empty' the spare rows if you believe they are affecting filesize, in the Name Box (address window), put 340:65536 and press Enter, this selects those rows, then rightmouse and delete (as for normal row delete)

    Hi,

Thanks for your help - it didn't really do anything.

If you follow my repro steps in a blank spreadsheet, you can see that those "empty" rows do affect file size.

I know that it has something to do with the fact that I used the "paste special" function - I just don't know how to get rid of the formatting or whatever seems to be in the cells.

I tried deleting the extra rows, but they don't "delete."

    Any other ideas/suggestions?

if you have correctly selected the rows as per my post, and deleted them, then saved and exited the file, then the filesize IS reduced.

If you have not yet saved the file then, of course, the size will not correctly reflect.

This doesn't affect the size of the file, but I can see what the problem is. You copied columns A and B, by which I assume you clicked on the grey column headers with "A and"B" in them. If so, you copied all 65536 rows in those columns. To avoid this, select only those 366 cells in columns A and B which contain data or formulas, then paste. This way the empty cells don't get copied.

I would be looking elsewhere for file size problems, though. Do you have an image like a company logo or photograph in the worksheet? Objects like this can dramatically affect the file size.

If you attach a sample of your workbook it will be easier to find a solution. Remember to remove/replace sensitive data before uploading the file. Look here if you need help with attachments:
