    Errors when opening Excel

Everytime I open an excel document, I get a series message that say:

'xxxxx.xls' could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify tha the file location is correct.

If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted.

Ofcourse xxxxx.xls is the file name, however here's what's odd. Say my file name is "January Work Report", then I'll get 3 messages where xxx is:

    'January.xls' could not be found.
    'Work.xls' could not be found.
    'Report.xls' could not be found.

    Then the file will open.

Any ideas on what this is or how to fix it?

    Hi,

the split messages are something that happened in the early stages of Windows where a space was interpreted as a parameter separator rather than as a part of a filename.

    Try a cleanup of Excel,

    Close Excel and
Windows 'Start' Button, select 'Run', and type
    excel /unregserver
    then
Windows 'Start' Button, select 'Run', and type
    excel /regserver

Search for a file *.xlb and remove it

Search for a file Personal.xls and rename (to hide) it.

In Excel, check Tools, Options, General and the 'At Startup, open all files in' and clear the folder name if not required.

Let me know how you go.

I did the run commands, and found 3 matches for .xlb. I didn't know if I should delete all 3, so I just renamed them to .old

    Excel1.xlb c:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel
    dialog.xlb c:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\OpenOffice.org\user\basic\standard
    script.xlb c:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\OpenOffice.org\user\basic\standard

I didn't find a personal.xls and the 'open all files in' was already empty.

But when I went to startup excel to change the setting, the errors didn't show up, so it sounds like it all worked

    Thanks a million!

I do have one more question though. This just started happening since I've had the above problem. when I go to close a file, it'll ask me if I want to save changes even if I didn't make any. Literally, I'll open the file and close it right away without even clicking in a worksheet and it still asks me.

Oddly enough though, it only does this for some files and not others. What would be the difference?

    Hi,

because Excel tries to open the worksheet where you closed it then (as you say) 'just clicking in a worksheet' is a change to be 'saved' on exit.

The files it doesn't ask for are the ones you click in the default cell or on the tab, so there is no recognised change.

The file Excel1.xlb was the correct one to remove, Excel will make a new (default) .xlb on startup.
I was not aware that OpenOffice used .xlb files, hopefully the dialog.xlb and
script.xlb are the same 'default' format, if not you will need to rename them back from 'old'.

Good to see that your problem is fixed, and thanks for the feedback.
