How to convert time (9:15) to time in quarter hours (9.25)

I've been poking around trying to figure this out but can't. The time of 9 hours, 15 minutes is being returned from a calculation but I want the cell to display the 9.25 hours instead. This seems like something simple on the surface, but apparently it's not. Any help would be appreciated!

    Try:

=A1*24 and format the cell as General (where A1 contains original time)
Where there is a will there are many ways.

Try this in B1, with your time in A1

    =HOUR(A1)+MINUTE(A1)/60 format cell to number

These are both great formulas if all times are PM. Neither of these formulas works for my AM times, though. Ideas?

Both work fine for me regardless of AM PM.

What's your input data and what results are you getting?

Ensure you describe your problem clearly, I have little time available to solve these problems and do not appreciate numerous changes to them.

Re: How to convert time (9:15) to time in quarter hours (9.25)

My input data is likely the issue. It comes from reporting software designed for paratransit operations circa 1997. I'm pasting into Excel 2010 and only have the option to paste special as text or unicode text. After formatting as time and applying either the *24 method or B1=HOUR(A1)+MINUTE(B1)/60 formulas, the cell displays "#VALUE", or error in value except for my PM times.

An issue not directly related to this thread but which is likely puzzling other users facing a similar input data issue is why the original data's appearance does not change when formatted in one of many different time formats.

Re: How to convert time (9:15) to time in quarter hours (9.25)

#VALUE sounds like the data is indeed text.
The first formula should have resulted in a number unless you have spurious data in there, e.g. spaces or non printable characters (usually CHAR(160))

Changing the format will only work once the data is numeric.

Can you post a sample workbook?
Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.
