COUNT function returns zero

does anyone know why COUNT function returns zero?

I'm trying to count the number of employees and applying the function to the column with employee numbers.

Are the employee numbers 'numeric' (if you do a =A1+1 does that work)?


note, if not use =CountA()

employee numbers are not numeric, they are text. CountA() works!
