Bar chart problem with size of bars and gap between them

I have a very simple stacked bar chart with only two bars showing the results I need. I want to create thin bars and reduce the gap between them to the same thickness as the bars.

I can reduce the gap but doing so increases the thickness of the bars, which does not produce the effect I want.

This has to be so simple but I just can't figure it out.

Thanks

Steve

Using Excel 2002.

Excel Facts

Create a chart in one keystroke
Select the data and press Alt+F1 to insert a default chart. You can change the default chart to any chart type
A gap width of 100 seems to make the bars and the gap the same size. Then you can reduce the width of the chart or the plot area to get the thickness you want.

the description is a little confusing

Do you wish to reduce both the width of the bars and the gap between them?

you can do this by reducing the width of the plot area or by introducing blank data sets before and/or after the plotted data.

if this is not what you want, please explain in a little more detail.
