Stuck in a cell

I'm running Windows XP with Office 2003 installed. Recently, without any settings changes that I'm aware of, when I open an Excel document, I can click into a cell and after that I can't do anything. When I move the mouse, it acts like I still have the left mouse button pressed and it selects cells as I move my mouse. I have checked to make sure the Shift, ALT and CTRL keys are not stuck. I tried pressing ESC, but that didn't release it. I tried using the arrows to move the selected cell, and it wouldn't allow me do change the active cell. It won't even allow me to type in the active cell or close the window. I have to go into another program then right click on Excel and close it from the task bar.

Has anyone else run into this problem and, if so, how did you resolve the issue?

Excel Facts

Remove leading & trailing spaces
Save as CSV to remove all leading and trailing spaces. It is faster than using TRIM().
One symptom I just discovered. If I open an spreadsheet and don't use the mouse at all, I am fully functional, but as soon as I click on a cell with the mouse, it locks into the symptoms I described above.

Check your mouse. Likely cause is the mouse wheel between the two buttons. This wheel is, in addition to being a scroll control, also a third "button". Most likely solution for your problem: press down (or "click") on the wheel several times, then retry your excel sheet.
Alternate possibilities: stuck shift key/s, tap them several times (respond negatively to the popup for stickykeys). Finally, check under tools | options | Transition Tab and ensure that no boxes are checked. One last thought: Toggle your Scroll Lock key on keyboard.
Hope this does the trick! /s/ Larry.

I'd tried the shift keys, but it appears I needed to try it a few more times. That seems to have done the trick. Thanks! :)
