    Question printing thousands of pages

I have a user that tries to print a spreadsheet that should be 1 page, yet it wants to print out thousands of pages, mostly blank. This is a form on the network, accessed via citrix. It is read only and this user fills it out and prints it. We actually prefer they save it to their own pc and use it there and save copies, but she insists on this way. But it still is a puzzler as to why this is happening to this person. I have printed this file to the same printer this user would use successfully.

If possible, try setting a defined Print_Area so the workbook doesn't have the need to try and figure out how much to print.

Select the desired print area and use File > Print Area > Set Print Area

    Re: printing thousands of pages

    Thanks for the quick response.

part of the problem is, if she would save it to her local pc she could do that, but as it exists, it is for all intents and purposes a web page that can either be opened in the browser (without access to any excel tools) or saved and then opened via excel. No one else seems to have a problem either way, at least not that has been reported to me. And ultimately, she will have to work around it, but if there is some solution to why it is happening to just her, I would like to find out for the future.

    Re: printing thousands of pages

    hi,

    Welcome to the Forum,

I've had this problem before & found that I had to close & reopen Excel for it to work properly (no matter how much I tried to redefine the print area). The issue seemd to relate to a messed up/conflicting Printer setting (in my case, on a network printer). Advice I've read (eg http://www.smartcomputing.com/editor...4l06/34l06.asp) suggests reinstalling printer drivers but I was on a locked down network & didn't have that ability.

I suggest checking all her printer settings, wherever you can find them, be it in the Citrix Options (?), within the file that is being opened etc...
I never identified a definitive solution myself, eg sometimes it worked when the only change I made was to select a different printer & then reselect the original printer.

    Good luck!

    Re: printing thousands of pages

ok, I have some updated info on my issue. It turns out the file is an excel file ste up as an .xml file. The user then enters info into various cells and goes to print it. There are no excel tool to speak of, just a form for lack of better discription. The only print properties are the ones available thru IE. Note that this is an isolated issue, just one person out of hundreds. It almost seems as though it wants to print a page per cell, but only for this one user.

    Re: printing thousands of pages

    hi,

Have you tried my previous suggestion of selecting a different printer & then reselecting the original printer?
    To elaborate a little...
Try selecting a different printer, closing the browser, & then reopening the browser before changing the printer back to the original one.

Edit: It may also pay you to do some searches on browser forums which might discuss the use of xml formats.

    Re: printing thousands of pages

I'm having the same issues with Excel 2010 and XP. I print to a Toshiba printer and it automatically puts in random page breaks, or makes each line a page break. I print to PDF or the HP printer and I have no problems. It's possible the driver is out of date, but it's network locked.

Doing the work arounds as mentioned here hasn't worked for me.
