Question Steel Cutting Optimization - Excel Macros

    Hi,

We are in having a requirement to cut Steel Angles as per Required length from the available Stock Length. Example is given below:

    Steel Section - MS-45x45x4

    Stock Length - 11 Mtrs - 3 Pc / 12 Mtrs - 4 Pc / 10.5 Mtrs - 8 Pc

    Fabrication Requirement :

    Mark No. X - 3.4 Mtrs - 10 Pc
    Mark No. Y - 2.8 Mtrs - 15 Pc
    Mark No. Z - 3.8 Mtrs - 20 Pc

We need a solution which Stock Length and How many number of pc to be used with the cutting instruction so that we minimize the scrap - Wastage.

Re: Steel Cutting Optimization - Excel Macros

    Dear Alf,

Thanks for the reply. I had checked the same. The example which I had provided is having multiple available Stock length against which cutting requirement are multiple.

In the download the file the stock lenght input is only for 1 length and in case which I had referred is having multiple length.

    Kindly suggest the logic.

    regards

stock lenght input is only for 1 length
Did you check shg's "Weld2" list as this allows input of multi lenght and cutting?

Re: Steel Cutting Optimization - Excel Macros

    Dear Alf,

I have check the same but it not taking sum product formula. I am again putting the requirement.

We are in Transmission Tower Mfg where we are getting Steel Angles of different Length. The Item which are suppose to get manufactured are of different lengths which we take angle from the stock and cut the same according to item length. Eg is given here.

    Stock Available :
Steel Angle MS - 45x45x4 having Length of 11000 MM - Number of PC Available 50
MS - 45X45x4 having lenght of 12000 MM - Number of Pc available 15

    Production Requirement :

    Item A - 2626 MM - 10 Pc
    Item B - 3838 MM - 100 Pc
    Item C - 3646 MM - 200 PC

So we need to use the Stock available and length in such a way that our Scrap wastage is minimum. So We try to manually calculate whether from length of 11000MM we can adjust one one pc of A/B/C or take 2 of A /1 B / 1 C like that.

Further there is a constraint that we need to allow some distance from available length. For Eg. 11000MM if given for cutting so to handhold in the machine we need to keep 200MM as buffer which is minimum.

This is normally called Steel Cutting optmization.

Hope this will give you fair idea of the requirement.

    Thanks for your quick responses.

Re: Steel Cutting Optimization - Excel Macros

Checking your numbers you say you need 50 pc of size 2026, 100 pc of size 3838 and 200 pc of size 3636 that makes a total of 1139260 mm and that is a minimum theoretical value as there is no wastage accounted for.

To fulfil this demand you have 50 pc of 11000 mm and 15 pc of 12000. Subtracting the 200 mm from each rod you have a total of 50*(11000-200)+15*(12000-200) this sum I calculate to 71700 mm.

The way your problem is set up there is no solution so you either reduce your production or buy more steel.

Re: Steel Cutting Optimization - Excel Macros

The uploaded file contains two solver models. The theoretical solver model is not a possibility as the “handhold” for “cut 14” is only 62 mm in its present state but if one weld a piece of steel (140 mm) to all rods being cut according to “cut 14” then this is possible.

Since there are quite a number of waste than can be used this will be the most cost effective solution.
