File opens then closes automatically due to filename

    Hi,

I have some templates saved as .xls files on a network share, and this folder is linked through the User Templates setting in Office 2000.

When I do File - New in Excel, and select a template to open (eg X1000.xls), it opens then closes straight away. If I rename the file to X-1000.xls, it opens and stays open... I don't want to change the filenames as they are corporate forms that are linked to our procedures.

Does anybody know why Excel is closing the file based on the filename? I have tried saving the file as an xlt, but the same applies.

    Thanks.

They aren't templates in the true sense. They should be saved with the *.xlt extension to be templates
    Hope that helps.

Well that's true, I agree with that statement, but the same issue holds true for both .xlt and .xls files. They are "Templates" in the sense of unpopulated forms, not by definition of Excel .xlt files.

Any code in them that could be causing this?

Sorry, I should have expanded - there is no code, no VBA, no macros, just plain simple sheets and cells.

As soon as I change the file name so that it is not "X" followed by a number, it opens normally - so it is a function of the filename! That's the bit that's really confused me.

I assume it's not just your PC that's having this problem?

That's correct, it is happening to anybody who tries to open the file (from multiple users and computers)

It doesn't matter about code. The file extension should be .xlt for a template. If not then the file can be over written, with the .xlt extension a new file will be opened without affecting the template. This file will automatically have a new name

Clueless I'm afraid. I can't replicate the problem.
