Inserting Word Object to Excel worksheet

    Hello,

I am trying to insert a Word Object into Excel 2007. I go to the Insert tab, then select Object under the Text grouping. From the pop-up window I select Microsoft Office Word Document, click OK and then I get a small Word browser inserted into the Excel document with a new menu bar at the top. I click File at the top, then Open to open the word document I want to Insert. I Select the file, Click OK, and then get the error: " "FileName".docx : file format is not valid ". I have tried other Word files, as well as the older .doc type files, nothing seems to work. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

If you are just trying to embed a document into Excel so it can be saved within and opened from within Excel when you insert object select the tab "Create from File" not "Create new" and browse to the document.

Then Check the box "Display as Icon". That should do it.

Thanks, that did seem to work I didnt use the Icon option as I want to be able to see the document in the worksheet. I can see the first page of the Word document in the excel worksheet, however the Word document is several pages long and I am only able to see the first page. If I click into the document it actually opens up the Word file, I would rather be able to scroll through the document pages in Excel, is there a way to do this?

You may have to drag out the window so it is large enough to view the entire document, if that is what you are asking.

I tried expanding the window, it just makes it bigger, does not include the following pages. The only was I have found to scroll through the pages is to Right-click on the window, and select Edit document, then I can scroll through it, is there any other way to see every page? Is there a better way of inserting the document into the spreadsheet, I mean other than as an Object?

Can I ask why you want a multi-page document in an Excel spreadsheet?

Step back a bit and explain what you want to achieve.

Re: Inserting Word Object to Excel worksheet

I have several (over 50 I would say) process procedures, all relate to different functions and pieces that is used in my workplace. Unfortunately there is absolutely no organization to them, they are in different places on our shared drives and if someone wanted to look at a particular one, it would be difficult to say the least to find it. I wanted to have a spreadsheet with a tab (worksheet) for each procedure, and then I wanted to group them by their basic function. On the main worksheet I will have command buttons that will take the user to the function, and once on that sheet, then can drill down to the actual procedure they are looking for. I wanted to have the documents directly in the workbook for ease of use. Is there a better way to do this?

Does the Excel workbook contain any Excel specific stuff? Data, calculations, or some such, pertaining to the procedure?

You could simply put a link to the Word file on the sheet, since embedding the Word doc will only show you one page, anyway, and if the user wants to see more, they'll have to open the Word file.

Also, with a linked doc instead of an embedded one, you can be sure that updates to the Word doc will reach the user, whereas an embedded file will lose the link to the original file.
