change cell format where there is an email address

I have a spreadsheet with email addresses. Whenever I click in the cell, it inserted the email address into my lotus notes. All I wanted to do was to copy the email address. How do I format it so that it is not recording as email address? Changing the format to text doesn't help. Thanks!
