HLOOKUP with 2 criteria?

Hello all,

Here's my problem, i'm looking to enter a formula in which the hlookup is based on 2 criteria; "dept" and "month". For example

So I have a worksheet like this...

......................Dept 1..... Dept 1..... Dep 2..... Dep 2
......................Jan..........Feb...........Jan.........Feb
Expense1..........300.........100...........500.........200
Expense2..........355.........564...........789.........865


I want to put a formula in a cell to lookup dept 1/Jan and return the value for expense1 whichi is 300.

Okay so I thought if i gave a simple example I could use the solution given and alter to my specific situation... but I can't so here's the real situation.

Tab called "actual"

......................5210..........5210...........6120..........6120
......................Jan............Feb.............Jan............Feb
Advertising.......200............545.............234...........676
Food...............844............234.............678...........987

Now I have other tabs for each of the indiv deptartments (5210, 6120) and they are all setup in the same fashion for the year (Jan-Dec). For for example, dept 5210 looks like this.

Actual
Dept 5210
......................Jan............Feb.............Mar............Apr
Advertising.......000............000.............000...........000
Food...............000............000.............000...........000

So I need a formula to put into the 000's above, that pull from the actual tab.

You're going to need to have the tab name stored in a cell. You can either type these in manually or have a macro go through your workbook and enter the tab name in a cell. If you opt for the macro approach, let me know what cell you want the name stored in, and I will write the code to do that, as well as alter the formula.

Thanks guys,

So i got a problem now... i have this formula on 10 tabs with about 600 cells in each tab so whenever i update/refresh, it takes a really long time. there any ways to rectify this?

Consider putting the calculations to manual and then manually telling the program when to recalculate. 6000 array-entered index/match formulas will bog down any worksheet.
