Adding Text to a Cell that already has Conditional Formatting Applied

    Hi

I have spent ages searching for an answer and I suspect this may not be possible to achieve in excel, but here goes...

I have a group of cells that are conditionally formatted using a formula to apply one of three colours depending on which condition is met (NB, the cells don't contain any text or numbers). See attached sample file.

I would like to add some text to the conditionally formatted cells to display a dynamically updated text string.

    Question 1
Is there anyway to achieve this in excel?

    Question 2
Is there any way in excel to allow a number to run over into adjoining cells in the same way that text does if there is no entry in the adjoining cell?

I would be grateful for any help on this... as to if it is possible to achieve.

    Many thanks.

A1: You can't see the text because the conditional format sets both the font and background colors. You either need to leave the font color as automatic or have another conditional format for when the cell contains text {ISTEXT()}.

A2: not to my knowledge. that's just the way Excel handles it.

EDIT: Of course you could make your number into text and then it would spill over... TEXT(12,"0.000000000000000000000")

Re: Adding Text to a Cell that already has Conditional Formatting Applied

    Hi Masteff

Thanks for your reply. I've now realised that the sample file (which I'd mocked up for demo purposes because the original is excessively complex) doesn't show the real problem.

I've attached a revised file that shows how my original is set up. It uses a Form Scrollbar on the sheet Gantt Chart to scroll the content of the Data Sheet. The Conditional formatting is applied to the Gantt Sheet.

Adding text to an already conditionally formatted cell, even with the text set to another colour or automatic (I'd deliberately made the text colour for the conditional formats the same as the fill colour) doesn't work. I tried adding a new conditional format along the lines of =ISTEXT(Cell Ref), but this doesn't seem to work either.

I also tried adding text to the Data sheet itself, but this doesn't work either. Also, any added text needs to scroll in line with the coloured bars.

    Any thoughts?

    Many thanks
