Tracking Attendance Percentages

I have created an excel spreadsheet to track attendance of an exercise class I am teaching. I would like to know each person's current percent attendance. (so if we have had 5 classes and they have attended 4 of those classes then it should show 80%). I would like it to keep a running tab, so as I add in the person's attendace it will continue that count, up to the 26 classes that are being offered. I thought if I did a sumif/countif I could get it to work, but it doesn't. Here is what I tried: =sumif($e$4:$ad:4,">0")/countif($e$4:$ad$4,">1"). Do you have a suggestion that would work? Thanks!

Using Function Arguments with nested formulas
If writing INDEX in Func. Arguments, type MATCH(. Use the mouse to click inside MATCH in the formula bar. Dialog switches to MATCH.
What do you put in the cells E4:AD4 to signify that the person has attended a class or not?

I have been leaving those who don't attend as blank, though I could change that if it makes a difference in the formula

Well, it depends on whether the whole range E4 to AD4 is to be tested for 1 vs blank, or whether instead you only want to test part of that range ( i.e. only those cells filled with 1's and 0's ).

Percentage of E4:AD4 that are 1's:
=SUM(E4:AD4)/COLUMNS(E4:AD4)
formatted as a percent.

That works in giving me the percentage, but I would like to show if I have had three classes and the student has attended three classes 100%, then when I add in the 4th class and he hasn't attended for the % to change to reflect that.

Please explain the process behind "when I add in the 4th class" ( i.e. how is the percentage formula to determine how many classes there are ). Is it the case that you insert a new column for a new class? Where is the percentage formula located exactly?
