Can't enter any data, please help.

I've been using Excel for years and had very few issues. However, I recently went into a spreadsheet to update it and was unable to select and enter data into an individual cell. When I click on a cell and try to enter #s nothing happens (my num lock is on). Then when I try to click into another cell it just highlights that cell, along with any other that I move my cursor over. Once I click on one cell I can't stop the highlighting from happening. I can't even click on anything in the toolbar. I am extremely confused, can anyone help?

I have seen this happen often - especially in Excel 97

The best method I found to fix the problem is to reboot the PC.

I do remeber being told of another method that sometimes worked but I can not remember what it was.

Thank you, but I've tried that and it didn't work. When I enter any spreadsheet it happens again and again. I have the 2000 version.

Could you possibly have locked the sheet with protection? Try going to Tools - Protection - UnProtect Sheet. This is just a hunch. Being as you can highlight cells, but not make entries.

Thanks, but I've checked that and it isn't protected. Also, it happens on any file I open in Excel.

do you have a scroll wheel on your mouse? if so, sometimes clicking that (not rolling the wheel, actually press it so it clicks) unlocks that from happening. try that. try hitting escape.

There wasn't a final answer from Microsoft, but you can try some of these answers that I found in another post.

    Hi,

try Windows 'Start', Control Panel, Accessibility Options, and clear any ticked box in Keyboard, Mouse, Display or Sound, and in General tick only the two Notifications.

    Then start Excel.

If the problem persists, then try, Close Excel and

Windows 'Start' Button, select 'Run', and type
    excel /unregserver
    then
Windows 'Start' Button, select 'Run', and type
    excel /regserver

Search for a file *.xlb and remove it

Search for a file Personal.xls and rename (to hide) it.

Let me know how you go.

Do I just go under the 'Start' and then 'Search' to look for the *.xlb file? Cause I tried that and didn't come up with any thing.

I don't know if this will help in solving the problem, but when I click on a different spreadsheet within the same file my cursor becomes an arrow with a piece of paper and I can't click on anything?

if you click and hold a tab this happens, make sure that your mouse button is releasing,

The search didn't come up with anything and my mouse seems to be working properly. Any other suggestions?

yes, redo the search to a successful conclusion and try a different mouse.

If you click on a worksheet tab and have a small down-arrow indicating position together with a sheet with an arrow then you are in the position of 'click-and-hold' that tab, you can move the sheet to left or right to re-position the sheet.

The pc believes that you are holding the mouse button, either by some sticky-key function, bad mouse, or bad mouse driver.

What was ticked in the 'sticky-keys' (the Accessibility) section?

    --------

    go to

    C:\Documents and Settings\HomeUser\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel

but replace 'HomeUser' with the login name that you use.

In there is a .xlb file

    delete that file.

    -------

Let me know how you go.

Your last reply about the Sticky key was the other method I could not remember in my previous reply.

This may be of some help... found this on another forum. Once you get to the sticky keys check box, turn it on, then back off.
