    Can Excel do tally marks?

Is there any way that I can format a cell so an operator can input tally marks and on the 5th one create the slash through like a conventional tally sheet. like llll/ (with the slash through the previous 4 marks)...Thanks for any assistance.

    rephrase 1st question

I'm just trying to figure out a way to format a cell in which I input 5 "i''s for example, and have it automatically turn into a single character, such as a "*" for example.

you can have the adjacent cell return a value of "*" if you have five "i"'s in a cell. Use an if formula to do this.
