How can I use symbols in a data validation list?

I am creating a project tracking sheet. Each month I will enter a symbol to represent the status of my project. I have 4 symbols I want to use. I thought a data validation list with my four symbols would be best but it is not working. Any suggestion is appreciated. Please consider that I am new at this.

What are you trying to do mate? What sort of symbols are you trying to use?

Is there any way you could upload an example of what you are trying to achieve? Validation lists should work with character symbols.

My sheet is attached...you'll see a Key with symbols at the top.
I have been copying and pasting each month but I'm hoping there is better way to make this work.

    Greatly appreciate your help!

Re: How can I use symbols in a data validation list?

Your main problem is not using ONE font for your symbols. Use MARLETT font:

    a - checkmark
    r - big X
    t - triangle pointing up
    n - large circle

Format your "actual" rows with the MARLETT font, then use a drop box with a,r,t,n and it will work.

We can use conditional formatting to color the font. Set the normal font color to blue (for the checkmark) and then use the other remaining 3 CF levels to color based on "a" "r" or "t" being in the cell.

    =======
As for getting the symbols themselves to appear IN the drop box, the font used by validation drop boxes isn't definable.

    Thank you.
Although this works I think it's confusing for the user to have a key and then see symbols and letters in different places.
Instead of a drop done list I have seen a macro that copies the symbol or picture and inserts it to the selected cell. Any idea how this is done?

    Thanks again,
    Joanne

Yes, it can be done, but it's not better at all. What you've designed is simple and clear.

Confusion is a momentary thing, lasts only as long as it takes to point out the legend and use it themselves...oh...3 times? Then it's not confusing anymore. Your legend only has four items, that can't stay confusing long for anyone.

If you add VBA, then macros will be on for the sheet as a whole, everyone using the sheet will HAVE to enable macros, and anyone who fails to (or forgets) will find your macro-based legend doesn't work. To me, that's potentially more confusing than the few minutes it will take someone to get used to the legend as yo've already designed it.

Since I know most people don't give up on their ideas even when counseled against them ( ), go ahead and post in the programming forum.

No problem. It's a nice looking sheet.

Re: How can I use symbols in a data validation list?

Is it possible to use full words in the Data Validation list and return a symbol? For example, have a list of: On Track, At Risk (instead of just N, R) and return in cell a symbol?
