ways around nested IF functions...

Hi guys,

This is my first post and i'm not particularly advanced at Excel so apologies if this is a stupid question.

I'm using nested IF functions to reduce a large number of bands to a smaller set using the following formula:

=IF(LEFT(D4,1)="<","< 150",IF(LEFT(D4,3)="150","150-300",IF(LEFT(D4,3)="175","150-300",IF(LEFT(D4,3)="200","150-300",IF(LEFT(D4,3)="225","150-300",IF(LEFT(D4,3)="250","150-300",IF(LEFT(D4,3)="275","150-300","NO")))))))

However im stuck at 275 and need to go to 2000!

All help much appreciated

Use AND(test, test, test, test) or OR(test, test, test, ...) as the logical_test argument of IF.
Sort by date Sort by votes
How big are the bands you want? And are they all numeric apart from the one that starts with '<'?

the bands I want are:

You said you wanted to go up to 2000, so I don't know if this will work if you have values +1000 but perhaps try

=IF(LEFT(D4)="<","<150",IF(LEFT(D4,3)+0>=900,">=900",FLOOR(LEFT(D4,3),150)&"-"&FLOOR(LEFT(D4,3),150)+150))

You may need to tweak this depending on which band you want 300, 450 etc to fall into:

=LOOKUP(IF(ISNUMBER(--LEFT(D4,1)),--LEFT(D4,3),0),{0,"< 150";150,"150-300";300,"300-450";450,"450-600";600,"600-750";750,"750-900";900,"900+"})
Note you could also put that last array into a range of cells and refer to that.

however the suggestions don't work when the values increase beyond 1000

What do the values in your D cells look like? Is there a delimiter between numbers that we could use - e.g. if they are of the format '1000-1100' we could use the hyphen.

Do you want the result to be ">=900" when it's greater than 1000? If so try

=IF(LEFT(D4)="<","<150",IF(OR(LEFT(D4,3)+0>=900,ISNUMBER(LEFT(D4,4)+0)),">900",FLOOR(LEFT(D4,3),150)&"-"&FLOOR(LEFT(D4,3),150)+150))

If that doesn't work perhaps you can post a sample of your data......
