How To Avoid Default Column Width

I create files on a mainframe that are both fixed-length AND delimited (usually semi-colon) and load them into Excel as .txt. I bring them into Excel as delimited but have to individually adjust COLUMN width. Since I frequently have 20 or more columns, this is tedious. I know there must be a way that Excel can figure out my lengths, but I don't know what am I doing wrong (either in Excel or upload from mainframe). Thanks.

Is it possible to import a single text file into Excel, splitting the incoming data across multiple worksheets rather than a single worksheet? Each each row on the text file would be evaluated by the value in one of it's "columns" and written to the appropriate worksheet. The file is "!" delimited and has 11 columns for each row.

Currently, I import the file into one worksheet and cut/paste the rows manually into new worksheets/tabs. The files are very large, sometimes exceeding the 65,536 row limit, which I could avoid if the data was split out coming in.

Any help anyone could provide would be WONDERFUL. Thanks!

I need to create a IF statement where it will count the character length and if not 6 then add leading zeros to field to make a fixed 6 character length .. so if field is 489 then the if statment would make it 000489

Hello,

As the title goes this is as simple as it gets. The macro worked good when I was using excel 2003 but now that I have 2007 everything works for except the resizing (Picture.Width & Picture. Height).

Code:

Sub AddImage()
Dim strPath As String
Dim strFile As String
Dim Picture As Object
Dim Response As String
Dim C As Range
strPath = "C:\\Photos\"

For Each C In Range("A1", Range("A65536").End(xlUp))
    If C  0 Then
        With C.Offset(0, 1)
            Set Picture = Nothing
            On Error Resume Next
            Set Picture = Sheets("Raw Pix").Pictures.Insert(strPath & C.Value & ".jpg")
            Picture.Top = .Top
            Picture.Left = .Left
            Picture.LockAspectRatio = msoTrue
            Picture.Width = 157
            Picture.Height = 138

    End With
    End If

NextC:
Next C
End Sub

I have tried to record some macros while I am resizing the pictures but to no avail the macros are blank.

Please help

Thanks!

I'm trying to freeze the widths of columns so that when users of the
worksheet are using it, they can't change the width. It's for editors who
write headlines for specific areas that can only be as long as the column is
wide or the text won't fit.

Imagine a whole box of lengths of aluminium sections for making windows.

To make those windows I need to cut these lengths into smaller sizes.

I need to do this economically.

How can I use Excel to help me make this a reality.

Firstly you would take a big size out of it and then another size out of the offcut piece.

And then another size out of the offcut left over.

I need to know how many full stock lengths (6500) long it will take to cut all the pieces listed above.

Is it possible?

You need to take into account the quantity of each size and fit it all in together for the most optimal outcome.

See attached example of possible layout.

Hello -

I am using Excel 2007. In prior versions of excel, when copying data, if I wanted to copy visible cells only, I would select "Go To, Special, Visible Cells Only" and then copy a range a cells. The default was always set to copy everything (including hidden cells), unless I specifically selected copy visible cells only.

In 2007, the default is somehow set to always copy only visible cells. Sometimes, I want to be able to copy all cells including those hidden but cannot seem to figure out how to swith this default option. I looked under Excel Options and did not see an option there.

I don't want to have to unhide and rehide everything each time i copy. I know i could do the hiding and unhiding via VBA but would prefer not to have to.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I have the strangest problem... somehow, right clicking a cell doesn't
bring up a menu anymore. It happens only when I'm in Excel only... it still
works even if I bring up macro editor within Excel... it only doesn't work
when I'm in Excel. I've tried Options and Customize... nothing there seems
to work...

Right now I have a sports league with 8 teams, I'd like to create a random 7-game schedule where each team plays the other team only once. Essentially this will be a 7-game round robin. However, I'd like to be able to use this for any number of teams and games.

I'd like to do this in Excel, but I can't figure out how to have a randomly generating non-repeating macro with text values in cells.

So right now I have a column of 8 values and need matrix of 7 columns by 8 rows next to it.

I've found this thread that has one for numbers, but I can't figure out how to do it for text values...

Good afternoon,

Is there a way to enter a colon into a standard number to create a value that can be formatted into a 24 hour time value ?

eg a time is listed as 1345 with a general number format, and I want it returned as 13:45 witha custom format of hh:mm.

Other than creating a table and using a vlookup function, I am hoping there is a better way?

Darren

Hey there,

I have been tasked with introducing userforms into an excel sheet and tbh I'm quite amazed that excel has this capability of adding userforms to excel sheets.

Anyway, I have 2 columns of data in an excel sheet and I wish to add this to a userform so that the userform displays the 2 columns beside each other with headings, like a table. The user should then be able to select a particular row and insert it into the specified cell.

I would also like the user to select a row on the table and then be able to bring up another table depending on the row selected...basically so that the user can draw deeper into the information that they require.

I have an example excel sheet where I have 2 sheets. One sheet is the user entry sheet called User Entry Screen. the next sheet is the tables sheet where my tables are held. Once the user selects the cell shown in the example sheet, it should then bring up the user form. the user then, depending on which item clicked, then gets shown the next window with a table and info on it. then user should then be able to select an item and the cells on the user entry screen would then get populated.

Personally I think this is a really tricky challenge and any help with doing this would be extremely appreciated.

I'll post up further comments as I am trying to work my way through it!

Thanks,

Jag

Hi Everybody,

First post on the forum, have only recently joined and im hoping that someone can help me before my head explodes!

I am trying to prepare a simple Material Quantity List for some Steel materials.
The materials are all in specific sizes.

What i want to do is, as i input the length, width and height of the structure in the spreadsheet, the Material Quantity List will generate the quantity of each piece of material i will need.

Does anybody know of a formula for this. I have been trying to use the IF function and getting absolutely nowhere, all suggestions will be highly appreciated!!

I know this question has been asked a bajillion times, so I apologize for the redundancy.

I am working with an Excel spreadsheet and saving it as a .csv file in order to upload to an application that parses out the .csv data as transactions. The system requires .csv files, so this is how I need to save my doc (with this extension). I have been successful at preventing Excel from coverting that long number into scientific format. I have saved as a TXT file, pasted the longer number and it displays correctly. That is all good. But I have to save as a .csv. So if I do that, close the Excel window, and then open again (as the .csv file), the numbers are back to being displayed in scientific format. I have tried creating an Excel doc from scratch and entering text in Text format, to see if this created a cleaner file. But again, the second I save as .csv, close the window and then open that file up again, that dang scientific format is back.

Does anyone have any idea of how to work around this? Once I have successfully gotten the numbers to display as the long-chain number, how can I get them to "stick" so that they don't revert back to scientific format when I reopen the file?

Thanks so much for your help!

Sorry for the question. Normally I find answers to my excel questions by going through the help tab or by searching on Google. However, I don't even know what question to ask on this one!?!

Basically I have created a spreadsheet with several columns, but I have one column that lists the shirt size (YS, YM, YL, AS, AM, AL, XL, 2X, 3X) of each person. Is there a formula that I can create that will tabulate the number of sizes (i.e. AS=2, AM=7, etc.)?

In previous years I made a column for each size, and simply placed a "1" in the correct column, and had excel just add the 1's from each column. However, that takes more time and space. I was hoping to streamline it this time around.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, doug

Is there a way to use the new conditional formats (data bars, icon sets, etc) in PowerPoint? Basically, I'd like to create a table that shows icons based on data, like in Excel? I know I could paste a pre-made Excel table as a picture, but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Thanks!

Hi!

I have a question regarding filtering of columns, hopefully someone is able to put me on the right track. I have set up Excel 2007 so that I can click on the drop-down menu in each column to filter them.

However, in my data set there is one blank row separating two set of rows. Now, when I apply the filter on a column, all the rows above the blank row filter correctly, but all the rows below stay un-filtered.

I guess Excel only looks at the consequtive rows, then stops when it hits a blank row. Is there any way of applying the filter beyond a blank row (i.e. the whole column)?

Any advice is higly appreciated.

Hi there,

I'm very new to Excel, and I'm having trouble figuring a few things out. Hopefully this will be very easy for you guys!

In Sheet 1, I have a column of cells that I would like to also appear in Sheet 2. If I add a new row to the column in Sheet 1, I would also like it to be updated automatically in Sheet 2. Currently, I can get it to show the contents of individual cells from Sheet 1 in Sheet 2 by using this formula in the formula bar for each cell in Sheet 2:

=Sheet1!A3 (or whichever cell it is)

That's fine, but I'd like to just have a formula that will reproduce the entire column (ie. without a fixed range, as new rows are going to be added to the column).

If anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd be very very grateful. Thanks.

Hi All,

I am trying to make excel automatically add a leading zero to values which are 5 digits long;

i.e. number input is 15185, then excel automatically changes it to 015185.

If I put a Customer Number Format of 0##### it works, however, a user could put any length of number into these cells, and if the number is less than 5 digits I don't want a leading zero.

Is there any way of writing a small macro to sort this out.

The numbers would be input into range B16:223.

Many thanks,

Andy

Hi,
I have a figure 4,929,524,832 in excel. I want excel to automatically covert this figure into millions/billions/trillions. I tried through 'format cells' but there was no option for this.

Any help?
