Annualize Function

I see a formula that our Human Resources Department is using to annualize voluntary turnover.

It looks like this:

=(E3/((A3+D3)/2))*12/months

So if I substitute with some actual data:

=(6/((22+33)/2))*12/months the answer becomes 21.8% (as the annualized voluntary turnover rate).

What does the *12/months actually do mathematically? I cannot find it in the excel help files and have not been able to figure this out using math (on the calculator).

Very new in this board. If I post this question in the wrong forum please bear with me.
There is about 20 staffs in our department and I have made a spreadsheet with 12 tabs for each month of the year Jan-Dec. If each staff have 15 days annual leave each year and how can I make a formular that can automatically calculate the balance of annual leave and entered in the tabs of the following months. For example if staff A used 5 days in Jan how can the balance of 10days be entered in the tabs from Feb-Dec. If he use another 5 days in July the remain balance of 5 days be automatically entered in the tab from Aug to Dec. Likewise if staff A took 2 days sick leave in Jan, and 2 days in Mar how can this sick days be automatically sum up in the months after. I am doing this manually at the moment and it is very time consuming and also very easy to make mistake.

I was able to convert start date and and end date to the number of days
inbetween the two dates. Does anyone know how to then convert the number of
days into months?



I need to create a bar chart for the year. I've already have 3 bars for each of the months, a plan, an actual, and a last year. I need to be able to split out just the actual bar, so that it is a stacked bar. The other two bars need to stay and remain unstacked. Is this possible?


I have a graph with various information in it. One is a line graph that tracks hours used in that department per month. The problem is that when it gets to the last month, and there is not yet data for future months, the line goes down to Zero (leavin this big diagonal line that makes the data look funny). I need this line to stop on the last month there is data for. (I do not manually enter the data, it is a formula that I do not wish to delete.) I know I can manually move the data that the line is pulling to make it stop on the last month, but I have a graph for 36 different departments and that's a pain to have to manually adjust 36 graphs each month. Is there a way to tell the line to stop if there is no data? Thanks!!


On my calculator, if I divide 462,534.05 by 335 I get 1,380.70. Then if I times 1,380.70 by 335 I get 462,534.50. Which is what I need it to be because I need to calculate the difference of a figure not dividing equally.

On excel, if I divide 462,534.05 by 335 I get 1,380.70. Then if I times 1,380.70 by 335 I get the SAME result of 462,534.05.

I have to account for the difference of not dividing equally so there is some format or accounting function that's preset that I don't want but I have no idea how to fix it or format my excel sheet to calculate as my calculator would.

Need a formula to calculate weeks stock in hand based on 12 months forecast.

Here is the example.

So, in Month of Jan2011 the Closing stock is 1270, need a formula to calculate how many weeks will this stock cover look at future forecast.


I have AplphaNumeric part numbers that sometimes contain hyphens or decimals. In order to make them more searchable (since people don't always use the hyphens or decimals properly when they search) I would like to create all the possible variants of the part number, but with one formula.

So AHW18.787 becomes AHW18 787 and AHW18787 with

=SUBSTITUTE(A1,"."," ") and
=SUBSTITUTE(A1,".","") respectively, and

AHRTW-A18-7007 becomes AHRTW A18 7007 and AHRTWA187007 with

=SUBSTITUTE(A1,"-"," ") and
=SUBSTITUTE(A1,"-","").

What I need to be able to do is merge these formulas into one, so that no matter what format the part number is in A1, I get a version of it with spaces in B1, and a version of it with no spaces in C1. I just have not been able to nest it all together - is it even possible with this command?

I have imported a DBF file into Excel and have a column of dates that are missing the leading zero on single didgit months. When I try to us the custom format of mm/dd/yyyy it doesn't work (interestingly, after I select that format if I click on an individual cell it changes to the right format).

Does anyone know a better way to do this?

This formula is supposed to calculate difference between today and date hired to give years and months of service. Works fine for all except if the person was hired in year 2000 then this formula shows 110 y. Any one know how to fix this? or have a different formula that works.

I have a sheet with a list of names on and I've noticed that when I use ctrl+F to use the find function, even when I know i have entered the correct name it still will not work. I have identifed times when I know the name is there on the sheet, but the find function says "Excel cannot find the data you are searching for"

Im unable to put any pics up as my work pc has java disable so photobucket ect won't work but has anyone else come across this problem and how did you rectify it? A search macro perhaps?


Today I ran into an odd problem. I typed in values for column A rows 1 through 10 then values for column B rows 1 through 10. then in column C, I made the formula C1=A1/B1. The math was correct it showed 542 in the C1 cell. So I dragged that formula down and it showed 542 in all column C cells which is not correct. And when I went to check to see if the formula was correctly dragged it was. For instance, the formula in C2 is =A2/B2 however the value of that cell showed 542 which was not the correct math/value.

But it gets even more weird. When I click on the Column C cells and then it shows the formula up top in the formula bar and if I put my cursor anywhere in the formula bar and hit Return the formula does not change however the correct value then appears in the Column C cell. It is like the act of putting the cursor in the formula activates it to work properly but until it is activated that C cell shows the value of the cell which it was dragged down from.

This is quite bizarre. Has anyone ever seen this before? I have no idea what is going on. I ran a scan for viruses and none were found. I tried it on several new/different spreadsheets but it keeps happening.

I have been using Excel (XP) to make a text chart for several months. Some of
my text entries are rather lengthy. The past two weeks these lengthy entries
are showing up as pound signs (#########) when I click off the cell. I know
the text will fit in the cell, and the problem isn't solved by making the
cell bigger or using a little bit less text. I have the cells formatted as
"text" and "wrap to fit". I have printed the pages and the printed version
also has pound signs. I just want my text to show up!



How do I calculate the number of batches per hour? Here's what I have so far:

Cell B5: start time: 4:15 formatted as 4:15:00 am
Cell B6: finish time: 6:15 formatted as 6:15:00 am
Cell B7: total time: 2:00 formula in cell: =TEXT(B6-B5,"h:mm")
Cell B8: total batches processed: 22 (this is entered manually)
Cell B9: batches per hour: formula in cell: =B8/TEXT(B7,"h")

as long as I have this formula in cell B9 the answer comes out correct which should be 11 per hour.
If the formula in B9 is B8/B7, the answer is 264.0, Is this because of the way excel is reading the total time or the total time is formatted as a time, not an actual number? Is this the correct way to solve the problem?
answer should be 11 per hour.

I'm trying to figure out what the formula is to multiply the total hours worked per week by their hourly pay for each individual. kind of like the
=Sum(I25:I32) Formula but I want to multiply the outcome of that formula by the hourly rate of 11.00, 15.00 and 16.00. Does anybody know how this can be done? If so I would greatly appreciate it.

Entering time values in custom format [h]:mm:ss
Cells accept hours over 23,
Adding cells in column returns correct total time.
Have not found a way to multiply these cells by a $ hourly rate.
So use HOUR(cell ref) and MINUTE(cell ref) to capture values in referenced
cell - then use these values to calculate total payment for $rate per hour.
However, the HOUR(cell ref) formula returns the hours in excess of 24 when
the cell contains an hour value in excess of 23 (ie 27 hours returns 3).

Im working with a large data spreadsheet that has Yes and No answers in different columns. There are blanks within the selection too.
I need to calculate only the Yes.
I have tried using the filters in the Pivot Table field list and they are not working.
So now i'm trying to add a COUNTIF formula in the Calculated Fields section.
The formula I'm using is =Countif('Time limit extension'="yes") and i get the answer "too few."
What should I be using in the formula to get the calculated field to work? I have search the whole forum and I haven't found an answer that can help me.

I would like to create a formula that has a not-to-exceed answer.

Example: I want the answer not-to-exceed $10.00

$6.00 + $3.00 = $9.00
$6.00 + $7.00 = $10.00



So I've got some data, which has the approximate form of a sine function. I want to find all the x-axis intercepts. I tried using the intercept function and swapping around the y values for the x values, but it only returns 1 value (so I'd guess it uses a linear regression to estimate a single line through the axis).

I was thinking of trying a nested if/and statement but I haven't quite figured out how to do it. Basically I want to identify the two values where it switches from positive to negative and also indentify the values where it goes negative to positive, I can then fit a straight line between them to find a better approximation of the intercept (though it might not be necessary). Preferably I'd like it all one function as I'm not doing it in VBA (I might do later though, we'll see).

Can anyone suggest how I'd find these value or the x-intercept. Any help would be greatly appreciated.


Workbook A has a cell that gets data from workbook B as an external link.
It does this using the indirect function because it needs to concatenate the
path and filename from other cells.

Problem is that if workbook B is closed, the cell in workbook A shows #REF!.

So can indirect work using closed external files or must the external files
be opened?

Is there a clever way of making that work?
