Qualitative Data - Counting Different Words |
Qualitative Data - Counting Different Words - Excel |
|
I'm working on a survey response, that includes around 10000 sets of replies to q's. Most of these are yes/no, tickbox replies which I can analyse without a problem...
However - some of the questions are qualitative, with one in particular leaving the respondent to write what their favourite holiday destination is. As a set list of places wasn't given as an option, there are hundreds of different types of reply.
Does anyone know how to count the number of instances of a word in Excel - so for eg the number of times Paris appears etc....
The only option I can think of is to literally write a list of places, and then go through the responses one by one adding them up... but this will take ages....
Any help appreciated!

I have 6 sheets to count and all the names are in column A (from A1:A100) on each sheet. The names are not in a particular order.
On sheet 7 I want to have a cell beside each persons name that counts the number of times their name appeared on the other 6 sheets.
For example Sheet 7 (called total) would have
Joe 5 (where 5 is the outcome of the formula I'm looking for to count all the times "Joe" appears on sheets 1-6).
I have it counting per sheet with =COUNTIF(A1:A130,"name") but this is not quite what I am looking for.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Edit: I am using Excel 2007 w/ windows XP
it as a drop-down list, you can select a name from the drop-down and it's
corresponding value will be added to separate cell? Basically, I have survey
questions which have five possible responses: Excellent - Very Good - Good -
Fair - Poor. We want to assign a value to each, 5 for Excellent, 4 for Very
Good and so on, so that when a response is selected from a drop-down, it's
value appears in a separate cell (so that we can calculate a total and
average score from the selections).

Basically I want to export data from excel worksheets to various places on a word document I had. I have created a word template as well as bookmarks for that template, as that seems to be the recommendation for performing such a task with excel.
My problem is ... Now what?
I basically have 1 constant worksheet that contains all my affiliates info (Name, Address etc), which i'd like to use to populate some bookmarks in my word template, and then i have another worksheet for the previous month, indicating sales etc for that affiliate. I intend on adding a new worksheet every month that i would use to create new invoices.
Furthermore, i'd really like to be able to update a new file (or perhaps a new page on the same file) for each company with the use of a button, similar to the one's you'd see in an access form.
Can anyone help? Let me know if you need me to clarify.
Thanks!

I have a spreadsheet with some cells setup with a drop-down list containing
Y, N or N/A
This is being used on a TabletPC but if I make a mistake or need to change
back to a blank field I have to invoke the soft keyboard, activate the cell
and hit backspace then close the soft keyboard - quite a long-winded
procedure just to change an incorrect choice!
What I would like to do is add a blank to the list so if I have to revert
back to a blank I can just use the stylus to choose a blank from the chooser
list.
How do I add the option of inputting a blank from the Data Validation List
bearing in mind I am using the Data Validation Source box for entering my
choices directly and not specifying a range of cells?
I have tried adding "" and even a space to no avail.
Although not a betting man I would wager there is a simple 'fix' for this
but things are only simple if you know how in the first instance! ;^)

Could you be so kind as to provide some code that will enable me to display a text box on a userform rounded up to 1 decimal place.
Where am I going wrong....
it calculates the number entered in textbox1 and divides it by a value that changes in cell O26 but the answer is in about 8 or more decimel places.
Only need like 65.3 as an answer not 65.277756942
This is the code ive used.
Private Sub CommandButton1_Click()
TextBox2.Value = Val(TextBox1.Value) / Range("O26").Value
End Sub
I am running Excel 2011 for Mac.
I have a Worksheet with a small amount of data, and when I click the Pivot Table button it automatically creates the Pivot Table in a new Worksheet. The Pivot Table data is fine, but I want it to display alongside the source data.
I've tried using the Move Pivot Table option and choosing to Create Pivot Table in Existing Worksheet and choosing a source cell alongside my current data, but nothing appears. Also, I checked in Edit menu and found that the Pivot Table appears to have not even been created/moved because there is no option to undo it.
Appreciate any help, let me know if you have any further questions.

I have some experience working with advanced filter for things like >100 but that's about it. Any help with this would be so appreciated.

This is what I have so far (hire date is in column B):
=((TODAY()-B4)/365)&" YEARS"
This function gives me a number with many decimal places.
I tried:
=ROUNDDOWN((TODAY()-B4)/365),0)&" YEARS"
It tells me I have too few arguments. Please help!
I am using Excel 2007 and suddenly I can no longer filter by color. The option is greyed out and so is the sort by Color option. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen?
Thanks in advance.
I want to protect a cell that I have a drop down list in, but I still want the drop down list to work.
When I try to protect it, the user is not able to use the drop down list to select other items. I didn't see an option on the protect sheet area.
Thanks for any help.

Im very familiar with how to write a macro to automatically autofilter a list based upon a Cell Value (i.e. Range =(A1)...etc.).... but what I cannot figure out how to correctly write is a way to have Excel automatically autofilter a list for any row that CONTAINS the Cell Value, instead of just the exact value.
Cell Value = "birds"
Example -- I need to filter every row so that I see every row that CONTAINS "birds" in the character-string, not just the row that = "birds".
a) is this possible?
If not, I'd like to know also so I can stop attempting to guess (-;
Thanks!!!

Per say here is what I am trying to do
If a certain "word" is used from the drop down list I want the background of
that cell to change its color to "green." And if later I change the "word" to
another from the drop down list, it will change it's color to a specified
color.
The drop down list that I use was created from cells that have the colors
already in the "word", but I do not know how to make the list show the colors
so it puts the word & color automatically in the drop down list to the cell
with the drop down (if that makes any sense).
If there is a way, please spell it out simple enough for me to understand,
as I don't know fully the capabilities of formulas or vba.
Perhaps a better solution is to use a workaround that relies on the HYPERLINK function to refer to whatever is selected in the drop-down list. For instance, if you have your data validation drop-down list in cell A1, then you might put the following formula in cell B1:
=HYPERLINK(A1, "Goto Link")
The solution directly above provides exactly what I am looking for
in the field where I write the formula, but it fails to hyperlink.
I have created a drop down list and linked each one of them to a
specific worksheet. When I select them individually they link to
appropriate worksheet. But when I select them in the drop down
list I receive the following error when I select the Hyperlink in
cell B1 as directed above.
"Cannot open the specified file"
Any thoughts?

We will be building 8 "widgets" a day.
We will work 10 hours a day.
There is a 20 minute break at 9:20 am.
Production shuts down for lunch 30 minutes for lunch at 12:30.
Production starts at 6:00 am.
Here is what I can do.
Production cycle time = (10*60)-30/8 or 71.25 minutes
If we start at 6:00 am, the first scheduled cycle completion time = TIME(6,0,0+71.25/1440)
My problem is when I am trying to use a logical "IF' statement to account for the 20 minute break or lunch and still calculate the end of each cycle time through the day I receive a number of error messages.
This is the formula I am trying to make work. I have the cell the formula is in, formatted with a "mm,ss" format.
=(IF(D4+G1/1440>9:20,(D4+G1)/24,(D4+G1+15)/1440))
I have included an attachment to help (a picture is worth a thousand words).
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I have bought a number of books in an attempt to figure this out, and I am still stumped
between Excel workbooks. They can copy and paste between worksheets. When
you highlight the section to copy and then go to the new workbook both the
paste
and paste special are "grayed out". This is true whether you right-click the
mouse, go to the edit menu, or use control keys. This occurs with any data
type and the most simple workbooks. I have seen some suggestions here but
none have worked for this particular problem. I have reset the menus and
renamed the .xlb files and neither helps. You can open the clipboard and the
paste will work, but there is no paste special option. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I'd like to be able to copy data from a list of websites into Excel. It would take too long to navigate to do an Excel web query for each site, so is it possible to write a macro that could do that?
Thank you!
